Betaine Detection Service

Chemical structure of betaine

Betaine (trimethylglycine) is a naturally occurring compound with vital roles in both plant and animal systems. In plants, it acts as a key osmoprotectant, enhancing resilience to environmental stress such as drought and salinity. In humans and animals, it functions as an important methyl donor involved in homocysteine metabolism and overall cellular health.

Due to its presence in a wide range of biological and nutritional materials—including Lycium barbarum (goji berries), sugar beets, spinach, and seafood—accurate measurement of betaine content is critical for quality control, research, and product development. Alfa Chemistry offers reliable and efficient betaine detection services tailored to the needs of food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries.

Our Analytical Capabilities

We offer two validated methods for betaine detection, each suited to different application needs and sample types:

  • Colorimetric Method

This technique offers a cost-effective solution for routine analysis. Under acidic conditions, betaine hydrochloride reacts with Ray's salt to form a red precipitate, which, once dissolved in acetone, displays a pink solution with an absorbance peak at 525 nm. This method is suitable for samples with relatively simple matrices and offers a linear detection range of 0.1–12.5 mg based on Lambert-Beer's law.

  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Ideal for complex biological or plant-based matrices, this method ensures high sensitivity and specificity. The sample undergoes methanol extraction and purification via cation exchange solid-phase extraction, followed by analysis using HPLC with UV detection at 205 nm. Quantification is performed by comparing chromatographic data against external betaine standards.

Service Workflow

1. Sample Preparation

Each sample is carefully processed—dried, extracted, filtered, and treated—to ensure consistency and optimal recovery.

2. Calibration Curve Construction

Standard solutions of known betaine concentration are used to generate a reliable calibration curve.

3. Instrumental Analysis

Customized settings are applied for flow rate, temperature, and elution method, depending on the chosen technique and sample type.

4. Data Reporting

Clients receive a comprehensive report that includes quantification results, test conditions, and interpretation for regulatory or product development use.

Applications

  • Nutritional supplement and functional food testing
  • Plant metabolite profiling and agricultural research
  • Botanical extract standardization
  • Quality control in food and beverage manufacturing
  • Clinical and biomedical studies
