Description Atropine sulfate is a cholinergic drug that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It is used to treat bradycardia and to reduce the spasms of smooth muscle, including those of the bronchi, gastrointestinal tract, uterus, bladder and urinary passages. Atropine sulfate also has been used as an antidote for poisoning by organophosphates and other cholinesterase inhibitors. The drug is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring about one hour after ingestion. The half-life is about three hours. The major route of elimination is via renal excretion of unchanged drug in urine.
