Description Bulbocapnine hydrochloride is an alkaloid that has been shown to have inhibitory effects on the rostral and trigeminal nerves. Bulbocapnine hydrochloride inhibits the synthesis of cAMP, which is a second messenger for many cellular functions, including the release of neurotransmitters. Bulbocapnine hydrochloride also inhibits the uptake of dopamine from synapses. Bulbocapnine hydrochloride can be used as a treatment for depression and high blood pressure. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on depression in animals, by blocking the reuptake of dopamine at the synapse and inhibiting its conversion into norepinephrine. Bulbocapnine hydrochloride may also be useful in treating hypertension because it inhibits the activity of Ca2+-dependent chloride channels, which leads to decreased blood pressure.
