Description | Corytuberine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid that has shown low bioavailability and significant toxicity in animal studies. It is found in a traditional Chinese herb known as Corydalis, which has been used to treat pain, inflammation, and convulsions. The mechanism of action of corytuberine is not well understood but it may be due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. This alkaloid may also have antinociceptive properties. There are many natural compounds present in Corydalis including protocatechuic acid and protopine. Protocatechuic acid is an antioxidant that can inhibit the reaction between lipoxygenase and arachidonic acid, while protopine can bind to DNA and prevent transcription. Other metabolites include cryptopine, fatty acids, and cell nuclei. |
