Description | Ervamycine is an alkaloid that belongs to the group of indole alkaloids. It is a potent antibiotic that has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. Ervamycine has been characterized in a mutant strain of Escherichia coli which was developed for the production of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. It is also produced by Tabersona sp., a bacterium isolated from fermenting sugar cane juice. Ervamycine has been shown to have antibiotic effects against microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens. This drug's mechanism of action is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to its ability to act as an inhibitor of protein synthesis or nucleic acid synthesis. |
