Description | Escholamine iodide is a drug that interacts with the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase. This enzyme is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, and its inhibition by escholamine iodide leads to a decrease in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as glutamate, aspartate, and glycine. Escholamine iodide also binds to coenzyme A and blocks the binding sites for tetrahydroisoquinolines. Tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids are potent inhibitors of thyroid hormone synthesis, which may lead to hypothyroidism. The structural similarity between escholamine iodide and thyroxine suggests that it may bind to thyroxine receptors or deplete thyroxine stores in the body. |
