Structure
Description (+/-)-Higenamine HCl is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have a positive inotropic effect on the heart, vasodilation effects, and to be specific for cardiac tissue. It has also been shown to improve urine output and decrease blood pressure in patients with congestive heart failure. (+/-)-Higenamine HCl has been used in experimental models and animal studies as a treatment for heart disease. Clinical trials have shown that this drug has no adverse side effects when used at therapeutic doses. This drug binds to the cell surface receptors on cardiac muscle cells and increases their contractility by stimulating adenyl cyclase production of cAMP. The use of (+/-)-Higenamine HCl can be detected through electrochemical detection methods such as amperometry. In addition, (+/-)-higenamine HCl is found in traditional Chinese herbal medicine as a reaction solution for amp-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation.
