Description | Reserpine is a plant alkaloid that was first isolated from the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina. It is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and psychosis. Reserpine binds to cholinergic receptors and blocks the release of neurotransmitters, leading to the symptoms of psychosis. Reserpine also acts as an antagonist at dopamine receptors, which may be responsible for its antipsychotic effects. Reserpine has been shown to have potent antitumor activity against a variety of cancer cell lines in vitro and in vivo, including breast carcinoma cells. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood but may involve inhibition of DNA synthesis or protein synthesis. Reserpine can be synthesized by hydrolysis of iso-reserpiline with hydrochloric acid, followed by chromatographic purification. Iso-reserpiline is a mixture of two compounds: neisosperma and apocynaceae, which are both in |
