Description | Magnoline is a fatty acid that has been isolated from the acetate extract of Magnolia grandiflora. It is structurally similar to other bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, such as vinpocetine and nootkatone, which are known to have effects on energy metabolism. The reaction mechanism for this compound is not fully understood, but it has been found to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction in rat striatal tissue. Magnoline has also been shown to have antimicrobial properties against some bacterial strains and prostate cancer cells. The optimum pH for the enzyme nadph-cytochrome p450 is around 5.5, which may explain why magnoline inhibits this enzyme at high pH levels. |
