Description | Serpentine is a naturally occurring compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes. It also inhibits the production of hydrogen tartrate by hydroxylase, which is an important step in the synthesis of cholesterol. Serpentine may have potential as a cancer chemopreventative agent or as a drug for treating neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The product can be synthesized by suspending resuspended rauwolfia serpentina in solvents such as acetone, chloroform, dichloromethane, and ether. The yield of serpentine bitartrate ranges from 1-10%. The product is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents.
