Theophylline (1,3-dimethylxanthine) is a plant alkaloid naturally occurring in tea and cocoa beans. It is one of the most clinically monitored drugs and is often used as a bronchodilator and respiratory stimulant for the treatment of symptoms of acute and chronic asthma. It is widely used in developing countries because of its low cost. Abundant evidences have indicated that low-dose theophylline possesses anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in certain diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, excessive amounts of theophylline may be harmful to the body or cause permanent neurological damage. To ensure that the dose of theophylline is at the correct therapeutic level, qualitative and quantitative testing of theophylline in both drug and plasma samples is required.

Theophylline is beneficial to humans as a drug, but high concentrations of theophylline may cause adverse effects in patients. Theophylline is usually taken in tablet or capsule form and monitoring is required via blood, serum or urine samples to ensure correct dosages are being administered. Alfa Chemistry offers a specialized technical platform for the qualitative and quantitative determination of theophylline. We mainly offer detection services for theophylline and its related compounds in the different samples listed below. If you have other samples, please consult our technical personnel.
