Structure
Description Berberrubine is a natural product that has been shown to be active against infectious diseases. Berberrubine is also an inhibitor of the enzyme mitochondrial DNA polymerase beta and may have potential for treating myeloma cell lines. Berberrubine inhibits the expression of enzymes in the pentose phosphate pathway, which is important for energy metabolism in cells. It also has significant up-regulation of genes involved in drug interactions and opportunistic fungal infections such as Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Cryptococcus neoformans. The effect of berberrubine on glycolysis was evaluated by measuring its hypoglycemic effect in diabetic mice. This effect was mediated through a matrix effect and dna intercalation into the cell membrane. Berberrubine also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes at or near the peptidyl transferase center, blocking mRNA translocation onto the ribosome surface, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading
