Hetisine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of yeast, fungi, and bacteria. It binds to the ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound also inhibits the growth of cancer cells and has shown some anti-inflammatory properties. The chemical transformation of hetisine can be achieved by reduction with sodium borohydride or perchlorate or hydrobromide or chloride. The isolation of hetisine hydrochloride can be achieved by crystallization from a mixture of ether and acetone.
