Description Meleagrin is a natural antimicrobial peptide that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against hl-60 and k562 human leukemia cells. It also inhibits the growth of wild-type bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis, by binding to their ribosomes. Meleagrin also has potent antitumor activity against various cancer cell lines in vitro and in vivo. It binds to basic proteins in the bacterial cell wall, which are responsible for maintaining its shape. Furthermore, meleagrin can be used to treat skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus because it binds to the enzyme penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) and prevents formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
